You see Allan Mann (Jason Beghe) has been paralyzed from the neck down and he is stuck in a wheelchair. So he gets a little helper named Ella to take care of most of the thing that he needs help with around the house. The thing is, is that Ella is a monkey. That’s right, he has a trained monkey to help take care of him. The only problem is, Ella is a very jealous monkey and doesn’t like Allan’s girlfriend, Geoffrey (Janine Turner). She doesn’t like his family much either. So she decides to help clean out all of the bad things in Allan’s life, including the people.
The villain of the movie is supposed to be Ella, I think. The problem is that Allan’s family is the ones who seem to be the true villains. All of them are really scummy people who are trying to take advantage of him. You have his overprotective mother (Joyce Van Patten) who just won’t let go and then there is the pissed off nurse (Christine Forrest) who seems to just not care about Allan at all, and really just takes this as a job. The movie is called Monkey Shines but I think the people are the creepiest part of the movie, and they are pulled off perfectly.
The acting is actually really good, with Jason Beghe showing the anger of being completely helpless and not wanting to rely on other people. There is also a great since of confinement that is conveyed through his acting. Just some really great acting on his part.
The only real problem with the movie is the monkey herself. Every time she was on the screen, I just couldn’t feel even the smallest amount of fright, because she was just incredibly adorable. Every when she was at her worst, she was just sooooo cute, but that’s just me.
Great film that has stood the test of time. Check it out when you can and enjoy the full monkey madness.Have You Read...?
