A very different monster for Godzilla to battle.

* * *

In the aftermath of The Return Of Godzilla there is a group of men trying to steal some of Godzilla’s DNA.  They succeed but are almost immediately killed by another man who takes the DNA to Doctor Shiragami (Koji Takahashi) who is trying to make some super grain that will grow pretty much anywhere.  After a little time his lab is blown up and in the process his daughter Erika is killed.  He decides to take her DNA and mix it with a rose plant in the hopes that her soul will still live on.  Miki Saegusa (Megumi Odaka) starts warning that Godzilla is alive and well, but no one believes her, that is until Mount Mihara is blown open by some crazy people and Godzilla goes on a rampage.  While all this is going on, the rose plant has now been mixed with some of Godzilla’s DNA and it is now a fully mobile killing plant.  Godzilla must now face-off against his biggest threat, a giant rose!

The acting in the movie is pretty stiff on all fronts.  Koji Takahashi is the best of the bunch and that’s not saying much.  Now don’t get me wrong, they aren’t terrible and I’ve seen a whole lot worse acting in the series, but the acting isn’t anything to write home about.

This is a great battle!  Godzilla looks better than ever!  Hell he looks meaner than ever!  He was probably really pissed that he was trapped in a volcano, actually he was probably more pissed that he was tricked into the volcano than actually being in it.  So when he gets out he decides to do what he does best, fuck shit up!  He looks really pissed in this movie and it really fits.  On the other side we have Biollante, which starts as a beautiful rose plant and then mutates into a towering mound of badass monster!  The effects crew had to have had their hands full with this one.  All the “extras” that Biollante has must have been a nightmare, but they pull it off with extreme precision and the end result is just beautiful (and terrifying, again probably just to me).  Very nicely done and another great leap forward.

Yes the concept of Godzilla fighting a giant rose is pretty ridiculous, but at the same time, as compared to the others in the series, it’s actually quite original.  Most of the other monsters that Godzilla has fought are either takes on other dinosaurs, creatures from myth, or monsters from space.  But this is the first “home grown” monster that he has had to face, and boy is it a doozy.  The overall idea behind the plot was actually by a man named Shinichiro Kobayashi, who is a dentist.  You see there was a contest for the fans to take part in.  The company was looking for the next good concept for the next Godzilla movie and decided to let everyone take a crack at it, and a dentist stepped up and came with a great idea.  The end result is pretty different than the original but there is still a lot that is intact.  It’s a fun movie with a crazy monster and some really good effects.  The acting is pretty stiff but overall just plain fun!

About The Drudgeon

I don't remember my real name or where I came from. All I know is that I'm traped in an underground cave with nothing but a TV, DVD player and a notebook and pen. They keep calling me The Drudgeon, I don't even know what that means. Someone keeps dropping horror movies in and yelling at me to watch them and write about what I watch. Then I eat the DVD and case, because they tell me if I consume the horror I will understand the horror. I think there are three of them. So if you are reading this right now, HELP ME!!!!!!! OUCH!!!! Someone just poked me with a sea urchin attacked to a pool cue, what the fuck is going on?
