RuPaul’s Drag Race on a horror blog?  Read the review to understand why!

* * *

So this is going to be a bit of a different kind of review.  Instead of talking about acting and effects like I always do, I’m going to explain why Drag Race is here.

Let me start by explaining about the show.  You see we have RuPaul, who is a drag queen (for those of you who don’t know, a drag queen is a man that dresses up in women’s clothes for performing) and she has a show that is looking for America’s next drag superstar.  Just imagine any modern reality show and toss in drag queens instead of “normal” people.  They do challenges; walk the runway and the bottom two must lip-sync for their life (as RuPaul puts it).  In the end the best drag queen will be crowned.

There are thirteen contestants to start and they have stage names.  Some are “normal” but others go in different directions like gay references or even some in-jokes.  Some of this year’s contestants are, Chad Michaels, Latrice Royale, Jiggly Caliente, Willam (yep, he’s the one from Ticked Off Trannies With Knives), The Princess, Sharon Needles and Madame LaQueer.

The first (as it’s called) Mini-Challenge was – Totally Toxic Photo Spread where they had to do a photo shoot while being sprayed with “toxic waste”.  Kinda horror related, but not really.

The full challenge was – Post-Apocalyptic Couture Outfit.  This is where the connection to horror really comes in.  You see, the drag queens have to run around and collect articles of clothing from past Drag Race contestants (including my favorite and the best Drag Queen EVER, Pandora Boxx), but the thing is that since it is post-apocalyptic they are now zombies (are you getting the connection now?) and they are hungry for some flesh.  So they run around like silly queens and get their clothing.  After that comes a great in-joke.  There is a drag queen named Shangela Laquifa Wadley, you see she was originally on season two and came back for season three.  Well she shows up for season four and in the end she gets eaten by the zombie drag queen, all while screaming out her catch phrase, “Halleloo”.

During the runway walk (here comes the other horror connection), Sharon Needles comes out in a very creepy horror themed outfit, but the best part is when she starts to bleed from the mouth.  Just imagine a super model walking down the catwalk and then all of a sudden blood just starts spilling from her mouth.  It was actually really fucking cool.  Then toss in the fact that one of the judges is Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark and the connection to horror is obvious.

Now I realize that this is just a reality show and it’s a bit different to review this for Forced Viewing, but I am always looking for horror in any corner of film and television.  This was a nice find because it shows that horror can pop up anywhere and sometimes in the strangest place.  This is the only episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race that deals with horror (so far), but it’s a fun show and more power to drag queens everywhere.

P.S. Pandora Boxx I love you and you are the only Drag Superstar!

About The Drudgeon

I don't remember my real name or where I came from. All I know is that I'm traped in an underground cave with nothing but a TV, DVD player and a notebook and pen. They keep calling me The Drudgeon, I don't even know what that means. Someone keeps dropping horror movies in and yelling at me to watch them and write about what I watch. Then I eat the DVD and case, because they tell me if I consume the horror I will understand the horror. I think there are three of them. So if you are reading this right now, HELP ME!!!!!!! OUCH!!!! Someone just poked me with a sea urchin attacked to a pool cue, what the fuck is going on?

    I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the only thing horrifying about this is that it’s reality TV, and all reality TV sucks. There isn’t a single good one out there. Not a one. That goes for game shows, too. Except THE RUNNING MAN. I ordered a copy of THE RUNNING MAN: HOME GAME, what, almost 3 decades ago? And I’m pissed that it hasn’t arrived yet. I’m still waiting . . . .

      I’m going out on a limb here, since we have fairly similar tastes in TV shows. Drag Race is nothing but the greatest time ever! At least here the contestants are actually talented and (for the most part) interesting. This is a great episode and Sharon Needle’s outfit was amazing. I don’t watch reality shows in general because I agree with what you just said but something about Drag Race keeps me coming back every season. It’s either that or Drag Queens to me are like midgets are to you.
